Helping You Conserve Our Natural Heritage

New England Woodlands & Wildlife can help you become more strategic with your land conservation efforts by using customized GIS analysis to identify conservation priorities.
|
Numerous towns and land trusts have been working diligently for decades to conserve our natural heritage. There are 145 land trusts in Massachusetts alone trying to conserve the rural character, farms, forests, and wildlife habitats of New England. And towns in New Hampshire approved more than $129 million dollars for conservaiton since 2001, which has resulted in thousands of acres being conserved. The work of towns and land trusts are quintessential examples of effective grassroots efforts.
Conserving land is not an easy job, and often the conservation work of towns and land trusts is carried out by a dedicated group of volunteers who want to make sure there is enough open space available for future generations. New England Woodlands & Wildlife can make these volunteers' jobs a little easier by helping to find and apply for grants that can be used to conserve more land and helping to identify priority areas for conservation through natural resource inventories and customized GIS analysis to help make strategic acquisitions that get more natural resource bang for the buck.
Helping You Care for the Land
The work is not finished once a piece of land is acquired. More and more conservation organizations are turning to conservation easements to conserve land. They are a cheaper alternative to purchasing land outright, but require annual monitoring to ensure the current landowner is complying with easement conditions. New England Woodlands & Wildife can help complete annual easement monitoring based on Land Trust Alliance standards. New England Woodlands & WIldlife can also provide baseline documentation prior to easement acquistion.
Land is typically purchased for specific purposes, such as to conserve wildlife habitat or provide additional opportunities for outdoor recreation. Make sure the land is able to fulfill those purposes in the longterm. New England Woodlands & Wildlife can develop a customized assessment of a property that will describe in detail the types and locations of the various natural resources that occur on the property (e.g., woodlands, wildlife habitats, trails, etc.). New England Woodlands & Wildlife also will describe how those resources compare and interact with surrounding properties, and provide a menu of options for enhancing those resources. New England Woodlands & WIldlife can then assist with implementing any options that are chosen.
Whether the purposes of an acquisition were for enhancing opportunities for outdoor recreation, maintaining a healthy working forest, conserving and improving wildlife habitat, or enhancing general environmental health, NEWW can help care for your town's or land trust's property for today’s and tomorrow’s generations.
